Our story

Built from experience, not a textbook.

I rose through the ranks of a large public company faster than I probably should have. Early in my career I was given leadership responsibility well before I had the mentorship to back it up. For years I struggled with the transition from analyst to leader — figuring it out largely on my own, making mistakes that better guidance could have prevented.

Eventually I was exposed to great leaders who taught me what effective leadership actually looks like. That combination — hard-won lessons and the right mentorship — allowed me to drive significant change through a large, complex organization by building a workforce that was disciplined, data-driven, and genuinely committed to delivering results.

"I was almost fired. What saved me was the same thing that shaped me early on — a mentor who helped me build the skills and tools I was missing."

In 2021 I joined a high-growth energy startup as SVP of Operations. I thought I was ready. I wasn't. Changing industries, managing a more established workforce, and scaling at speed exposed every gap in my toolkit. The pressure became almost unbearable. I nearly lost my job.

What followed was the most formative period of my career. My replacement became one of my most influential mentors. Together we built the organizational skills, planning systems, and execution frameworks that I had been missing. I survived an acquisition, implemented programs that materially improved performance, and came out the other side with a toolkit that actually works.

I started EHE because too many capable people are navigating these challenges without the right support. I want to be the advisor I needed — honest, experienced, and fully invested in your growth.

Bridging the Gap book cover

Bridging the Gap: A Memoir on Learning to Lead

Nobody tells you that the jump from individual contributor to leader is a leap with no training manual. J.P. McNeil wasn't ready when he got promoted, and this raw, honest memoir documents how he learned to lead—and what it cost him to get there.

Through twelve interconnected stories, J.P. strips away the performance of confidence that most leaders hide behind. He walks you through the gap between the leader you need to be and the one you actually are, revealing two forces that derail leaders more than anything else: ego and inconvenience. The ego that mistakes confidence for capability. The inconvenience of the hard conversations we defer. The cost is staggering—wasted talent, damaged teams, and years of painful learning that didn't have to happen.

But this isn't a book about failure. It's a book about the specific mentors, advocates, and hard truths that changed everything. It's about what happens when you finally let someone tell you the truth. It's about building teams from scratch, earning trust you haven't earned yet, and discovering that the gap doesn't close once—it closes in increments over years.

Most leadership books tell you what to do. This one shows you what it actually costs not to do it, and why so many leaders never get the conversation that changes everything. Whether you're navigating your first leadership role, stuck in a pattern that isn't working, or building the culture you wish you'd inherited—this book gives you what J.P. didn't always have: the mentoring and learnings that should accompany every leader's journey.

The gap doesn't close itself. But it can close faster than it did for him.
